BADGE (bisphenol A diglycidyl ether) based epoxy resins have been used in a variety of applications since the 1940s. However, limited studies are available about the occurrence of BADGE and its derivatives (BADGEs) in the environment. The aims of this thesis were to determine the concentrations of BADGE and its derivatives in dental sealants and textile products from the U.S. to characterize the sources of these substances. Furthermore, concentrations of BADGEs in samples from various stages of waste water treatment plants (WWTPs) in the U.S. were also determined to investigate the environmental pathway and fate of these substances. BADGEs were also measured in surface water, tap water, indoor air and biosolids collected from the U.S. to understand the environmental distribution and pathways of human exposure.

520 $a This thesis documents the widespread occurrence of BADGEs in dental sealants and textiles available in the U.S. market. BADGEs concentrations in dental sealants were high at microg/g level. BADGEs were mainly present as hydroxylated or hydrochlorinated derivatives in dental sealants as opposed to their occurrence as the parent compound in textiles. BADGEs are expected to reach WWTPs following leaching from products and down the drain discharges. The concentrations of BADGEs in wastewater varied widely and BADGEs were not removed completely through the treatment processes. Considerable sorption to suspended particulate matter in WWTPs resulted in elevated levels of BADGEs in sludge. Disposal of sludge was a significant factor to environmental emission of BADGEs. Widespread occurrence of BADGEs in surface water, tap water, indoor air, and biosolids was also observed and BADGE•2H2O was the predominant analogue found in these matrices. Human exposures to BADGEs through tap water consumption and indoor air inhalation were minor, in comparison with ingestion through canned foods. Overall, this thesis documents widespread environmental occurrence and human exposure to BADGEs and establishes BADGEs as emerging environmental chemicals.
