The external relations of the Mughal empire have not received the scholarly attention they deserve. This is especially true of the Mughal relations with the most powerful Muslim state of the time: the Ottoman empire. No modern account of these relations is available. The present study is, therefore, a pioneering effort. Besides exploring Mughal India's diplomatic relations with the Ottoman empire, this study also focuses on such important issues as the Mughal attitude towards the Ottoman claim to the Khilafat of Islam and the problem of Haj traffic in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Mughal relations with the Sharifs of Mecca have also been examined.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a Three fundamental questions guide this study. First, what factors determined Mughal policy towards the Ottoman empire? Was it guided by the interest of the Mughal state? Or was it governed by the whims and prejudices of the Mughal Emperors? Second, did Mughal relations with the Safavids, the Uzbeks, and the Sharifs of Mecca have any bearing on Mughal-Ottoman relations? Third, did religion exercise any influence on the relationship between the Mughal and the Ottoman states? What, in sum, were the factors conducive to amity and to conflict between the Mughals and the Ottomans?
520 $a The study is based on a variety of sources. Official documents of the Ottoman government, Mughal and Ottoman chronicles, and the diplomatic correspondence of the period have been mainly used. Several unpublished English and Portuguese documents have also been utilised.
520 $a The study demonstrates that the Mughal attitude towards the Ottomans was largely governed by the events in Safavid Persia and Uzbek Central Asia. Whenever the Mughals felt threatened by Persia, they turned towards the Ottomans for support. The Ottoman-Uzbek concord, on the other hand, clouded the Mughal-Ottoman relations. But religious or sectarian considerations did not exercise much influence on their mutual relationship. Though often proposed, a Sunni alliance against Persia never materialized. A recurring source of conflict was the rivalry over the question of Khilafat. Rejecting the Ottoman claim to Khilafat, most of the Mughal Emperors advanced their own claim to this coveted position. These factors were responsible for the lack of active and intimate relations between Mughal and the Ottoman empire.
