Introduction: The aim of this study was to explore the perspectives of coaches regarding the participation of athletes with autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, and learning disability in youth sports. Research has examined the importance of social integration of children with disabilities, the influential role of the coach, the perspectives of coaches with formal training, as well as parent and child perspectives regarding the integration of children with intellectual disabilities in youth sports. Despite rarely having formal coaching training, volunteer coaches are frequently expected to facilitate equitable sports participation of children who have diverse learning styles and needs. Methods: The research team distributed a 16 question, openended survey to both local and national youth sports organizations. Ten respondents with at least one year of coaching experience reported on their experiences involving children with either autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability or learning disability in a non-school based youth athletics (ages 6-12) program. Results: Using qualitative analysis, six themes were identified within the survey data. These included (1) happiness as a motivator, (2) acceptance, (3) self-esteem, (4) importance of the parent-coach relationship, (5) patience, and (6) the child's success. Discussion: Inclusion of children with intellectual disabilities was perceived to be beneficial for all parties involved. Additional supports should be considered to increase the effectiveness of volunteer coaches in facilitating the participation of these children. Training programs for volunteer coaches could educate coaches on coaching styles, adaptations to activities, and techniques to support engagement and maintain safety. Identifying coaches' perspectives on inclusion is a step towards recognizing the barriers and facilitators of the participation of athletes with disabilities in youth sports.
