Environmental factors play an important role in adult development, therefore, social and cultural background may influence grandparental roles. The present research is an attempt to investigate the grandparent in Chinese culture. Special attention was given to the meaning of grandparenthood, the relationship between grandparent and grandchild, the style of grandparenting, factors in determining grandparenting style, and the grandparent or parent feels about living together.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Special attention was given to the meaning of grandparenthood, the relationship between grandparent and grandchild, the style of grandparenting, factors in determining grandparenting style, and the grandparent or parent feels about living together.
520 $a The subjects are grandparents and parents of 221 three-generational extended family from urban and rural Taipei. The self constructed questionnaire was presented. The results showed that the average age for becoming a grandparent is 53.8 for men and 49.25 for women. There is a high frequency of selection of biological renewal and/or continuity as the primary meaning of grandparenthood. The relationships between grandparent and their grandchild are close and satisfying. The style of the fun person is the most endorsed by grandparents, while the least endorsed is the distant figure. Grandparent's sex, age, marital status, occupational status, and number of grandchildren did not affect styles of grandparenting, while grandparent's educational level did affect styles of grandparenting.
520 $a The findings also showed that most of the grandparents and parents thought that living together was an ideal family situation, only a minority of grandparents and parents would not live together if they had a choice. A difference between grandparents and parents in their feelings on living together was found, particularly among grandmothers and mothers.
