Maehr and Braskamp (1986) posited the concept of personal incentives as an important factor in determining whether a person will be motivated to achieve in a given situation. Personal incentives, in brief, refer to the values a person associates with the situation. The purpose of this study was to explore this theoretical construct, personal incentives, in educational settings, which has not yet been scrutinized. Specifically, it examined students' inclinations to various types of incentives, and the relationship between personal incentives and academic performance. 520 $a The subjects were 2260 7th and 9th graders from six junior high schools in Taiwan. A self-report, structured questionnaire was designed to tap students' personal incentives. Test scores on interim exams within each school were employed as measures of students' academic performance.
520 $a Five categories of personal incentives were identified: Task, Social Evaluation, Social Solidarity, Material Rewards, and Leadership. Ninth graders were found to be less task-oriented than 7th graders. Their academic achievement was also less related to task motivation than that of 7th graders. Boys appeared to be somewhat more task-oriented than girls. The relationship between task motivation and academic performance was also stronger for boys than for girls.
520 $a The study has provided guidance for future applications of personal incentives in explaining school motivation and achievement. It has also demonstrated that the school systems are gradually stiffling students' intrinsic motivation in learning by channeling students' attention to external evaluation.
