Standardized testing has affected many sectors of general education. High-stakes testing, in particular, has influenced school curriculum, instructional practices, and the morale of students and teachers. There is a significant amount of research concerning the effects of testing on general education, but little has been written regarding the effects of testing on elementary general music. The purpose of this study was to explore elementary music teachers' perceptions regarding standardized testing in elementary general music classes. Participants consisted of 23 elementary general music teachers who taught grades three and four in a school district in north Texas. Participants represented varying levels of experience, age, gender, and race. Additionally, as it has been shown that general education teachers' experiences vary according to the socioeconomic status (SES) of their school (Herman, 1990), teachers from an equal number of low and high SES schools were asked to participate. This study found that 86.96% of surveyed teachers believed their school district's standardized music test is only a slightly to moderately accurate tool for assessing students' musical knowledge and understanding. Teachers that believed the standardized test was only slightly to moderately accurate indicated that the standardized test affected their overall teaching practices, opportunities for active music making, and level of work-related stress.
