The current study investigated the association between Nonverbal and Verbal IQ discrepancy on translated SB5 as a predictor of speech and language deficits in English Language Learners (ELL). Drawing from archival data, assessment results from a sample of 67 participants who were administered both the translated SB5 and CELF-4 assessments in Spanish or Urdu/Hindi/Punjabi were analyzed. Results suggest that Verbal IQ on the translated SB5 better predicts speech and language deficits as measured by the Core Language Score (CLS) on the CELF-4 in ELL students than Nonverbal IQ. Verbal IQ is also a better predictor of expressive language skills (Expressive Language Index (ELI) on the CELF-4) in ELL students. Nonverbal IQ on the other hand was found to be a better predictor of receptive language skills (Receptive Language Index (RLI) on the CELF-4). Nonverbal and Verbal IQ discrepancy on the translated SB5, does not demonstrate predictive validity on speech and language deficits in the current sample. Gender effects as well as effects of language of assessment on the predictive validity of a Nonverbal and Verbal IQ discrepancy were not found. Positive relationships were found between the Fluid Reasoning (FR), Knowledge (KN), Quantitative Reasoning (QR) and Working Memory (WM) domain performances on the translated SB5 and speech ability as measured by the CLS on the CELF-4.
