Research on tokenism processes or solo status has sought to examine what occurs in groups when there is proportional under representation or significant numerical imbalance in groups. The body of literature on tokenism and solo status has attempted to explain the mechanism for token effects by means of tribal stigma, distinctiveness, stigmatizing categorization, category based processing, stereotype threat, social stigma, role entrapment/encapsulation and low master status. While these proposed mechanisms may be reasonable explanations in some instances, none can consistently explain token effects across race and gender in both racial and gendered social contexts. The purpose of this study was to explore the hypothesis that "negative qualitative evaluation" is a general mechanism for tokenism effects. In this research, participants' "anticipated evaluation" of themselves by their group members is manipulated in an expected upcoming group task.

520 $a Results of this study illustrate that anticipated qualitative evaluation is a powerful factor in producing tokenism effects such as feelings of being negatively stereotyped, discomfort and preference to change to a different group. When the type of evaluation is manipulated, and all other conditions remain constant (gender, race and context), those in the negative qualitative evaluation condition experience tokenism effects, moreso than those (tokens or nontokens) anticipating a positive qualitative evaluation. This research serves as a point for exploring and defining a more pure and consistent mechanism that can reach beyond race, gender and context to explain and predict token effects. From this research, I conclude that anticipated qualitative evaluation is a mechanism for producing tokenism effects. In addition, characteristics of race and gender may share properties of the evaluation component and in the absence of a manipulation of evaluation may contribute to tokenism effects. The long term goal of this research is bring together theory and policy/practice as it relates to intergroup relations in racial and gendered contexts.
