This study was an exploration of the lived subjective experience of resilience and overcoming adversity by interviewing older adult individuals in Erikson's eighth stage of psychosocial development. By uncovering the essence of resilient experiences, correlates of resilience were revealed. As the human life span continues to increase, a multitude of older individuals possess valuable information regarding resiliency across the life span. Interviewing these individuals supports the naturally occurring life review process. This study utilized a phenomenological qualitative research design. While both male and female participants were wanted, only five female participants were found. A discussion of the use of fewer subjects is included. These five participants engaged in semistructured interviews that were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed by the researcher using thematic analysis. This thematic analysis uncovered three categories with seven underlying themes regarding the correlates of resilience as delineated by Erikson's eighth stage of psychosocial development, which represents the final crisis of integrity versus despair. The seven themes identified were: (a) personality traits, (b) interest in learning, (c) acceptance, (d) meaning/purpose, (e) gender identity, (f) safety, and (g) sense of belonging. Clinical implications of the findings and suggestions for future research are further discussed.
