The topic under study was the phenomenon of gender bias against women working in law enforcement. In today's law enforcement communities women make up a very small percentage of the sworn law enforcement population. The law enforcement community as a whole, has had difficulties in maintaining sufficient numbers to continue to carry out their duties to the communities they serve. This difficulty in maintaining numbers only enhances the problem that women face in becoming a member of the law enforcement community and maintaining a career in said field. The recruitment efforts toward women to fill open positions is dismal at best as many law enforcement administrators would rather keep the position open rather than fill it with a women. This qualitative research designs purpose was to build on prior studies in hopes of finding a solution to a problem that has gone on far too long. The participants in this study were active women police officers living in the areas around Phoenix, Arizona. Each had a story to tell as some will see themselves as victims of a biased societal career, while others considered it as a rite of passage, and still others said they find little, if any, discrimination and bias on the job.
