Abstract Researchers of empirical studies have posited that the population of older adults has experienced significant growth and that current infrastructure is inadequate to care for the needs of older adults and will potentially be problematic in the future. Trends in elderly population studies indicate that older adults often experience significant discontent when transitioning into assisted livings or assisted living facilities. The purpose of this qualitative study using action research was to explore the perceptions and experiences of older adult residents who transitioned into assisted living within the past 2 years. This qualitative action research was conducted in a private assisted living facility in Maryland. The study included a sample of 12 participants (6 females and 6 males). Data collection involved face-to-face interviews and observation of the participants. The interview consisted of 12 open-ended questions and the observations included 6 criteria (appearance, verbal interaction, physical behaviors and gestures, reaction to intrusion in personal space, movements, and demeanor and social standings). Data analysis involved using NVivo 11 qualitative analysis software. The study conclusions are that the study provides a platform on which the demographic, social, and environmental factors that affect residents in assisted livings or assisted living facilities can be used to provide guidance and help to establish procedures that can be used improve the quality of life of residents. This study provides valuable insight into assisted living care that can be instrumental in guiding evidence-based practice.
