The objective of "Architecture in Three Keys" is to examine how Japanese architect Tange Kenzo (1913--2005) negotiated and reconfigured the city in postwar Japan through an architectural methodology that engaged new technologies, art, and socioeconomic policy. In other words, this dissertation is a history of the emergence of urban design as a discipline in Japan during the interwar and early postwar periods. By looking at a series of smaller scale, lesser known works, particularly from the period between 1948 and 1955, we find a highly sophisticated approach to historicization and innovation that defies parochial interpretations of tradition and modernity. Despite modernism's longstanding affinity for Japan's pre-modern architecture, Tange achieved international notoriety by rejecting the two celebrated themes of Japan's architectural tradition---integration with nature and aestheticization of tea culture---and devised an architecture traversed in scale from dwelling units to national planning. Almost uniquely among architects in the non-Western world, Tange made fundamental contributions to the development of international modernism.

520 $a Amounting to a prehistory to Tange, the first half of the dissertation attempts to delineate an alternative history to the ideological and methodological formation of modern architecture in Japan. Chapter 1 begins with the two dominant intellectual strains of architectural discourse in modern Japan, rationalism and historicism. Chapter 2 explores the corollary paradigm of classicism as an alternative to the conventional discourse of tradition and cultural identity. Chapter 3 examines how urban planning and design in prewar Japan had its specific roots in the rationalist school that quickly broadened into socially engaged approach to urban life and built form. The second half of the dissertation addresses Tange's architectural work proper. Chapters 4 and 5 consider civic architecture and collaborations with the allied arts in the context of postwar Japan's pursuit of democracy and civil society. The last chapter is a close study of Tange's Tokyo Bay Plan (1960). Usually interpreted as a work of decontextualized utopianism, Tange's plan in fact was the result of a two-decade long study of Tokyo's urban and regional planning.
