520 $a The purpose of this study was to delineate the status of performance art ritual in the context of postmodern thought in the United States of America.
520 $a In order to accomplish this, a historical overview and the characteristics of performance art ritual in relation to related performance genres such as play, performance art, theater and ritual were presented. An aesthetic investigation of the works of Ana Mendieta, Rachel Rosenthal, Linda Montano, Houston Conwill and Mark Antrobus, performance artists who have worked in a performance art ritual mode was conducted in order to achieve an amplified view of the application of this phenomenon.
520 $a For an in-depth probe to achieve an experiential understanding from an artist's perspective, the artist/researcher created three works of performance art ritual and subsequently conducted an aesthetic investigation of these works. There followed a review of the literature on postmodern thought, with an emphasis on its manifestation in art. A discussion of the status of performance art ritual as postmodern thought concluded the study.
520 $a The historical overview presented, identified the origins and development of performance art ritual with a focus on the impact of ritual, myth and spirituality. A modified version of Richard Schechner's performance chart, in Performance Theory and elements of Don Ihde's methodology as outlined in Experimental Phenomenology were utilized as tools to probe for the distinguishing characteristics of performance art ritual.
520 $a The aesthetic investigation of the works of the selected artists as well as those of the artist/researcher followed ethnographer James P. Spradley's outline for participant observation; the Ecker/Kaelin taxonomy of aesthetic inquiry and Professor David Ecker's lectures on conducting aesthetic investigations.
520 $a A synthesis of postmodern thought in the United States was derived by an exclusive view of the writings of American theorists in keeping with the stated purpose of the study. Based on the findings of the study, the artist/researcher concluded that the status of performance art ritual is an avant garde manifestation of postmodern thought.
