Thesis (M.Ed.)--The University of Regina (Canada), 1992.
How do English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and English as a Second Language (ESL) learners learn English idioms? Do they learn them entirely as new structures or do they transfer some idioms into English from their first language? An affirmative answer to the latter will show that the transfer of some language elements from one language to another is possible; an affirmative answer to the former will preclude language transfer as a process in second language acquisition. This thesis examines the transfer of certain Chinese idioms into English by adult Chinese EFL learners. Thirty-five Chinese second-year university students were used as the subjects of this study. All the subjects were studying English as a Foreign Language at Shandong University in China at the time the research data were collected. The study instruments were three tests designed to examine the subjects' comprehension and production of English idioms: one multiple-choice comprehension test and two production tests (an English to Chinese translation test and a Chinese to English translation test). Analysis showed that transfer in the learning of English idioms for adult Chinese learners occurred with certain types of idioms. Identical and similar idioms were transferred easily by subjects, but different idioms were transferred with difficulty. The multiple-choice comprehension test facilitated the transfer of idioms from Chinese to English. The translation tests showed no significant difference in the number of idioms transferred from English to Chinese or from Chinese to English. This study shows that in English as a Foreign Language classes there are situations where teachers should take the learners' first language into consideration. Some suggestions as to how this can be achieved are made at the conclusion of the study.
