This project examines the issues of culture and identity of American-born Chinese from the time they first made their presence known in the 1930s, through World War II, McCarthyism, and the 1960s, to the present. 520 $a This project examines the issues of culture and identity of American-born Chinese from the time they first made their presence known in the 1930s, through World War II, McCarthyism, and the 1960s, to the present. 520 $a While most studies of ethnic Americans are based on the "European model" which assumes that eventually all ethnic groups become absorbed into the existing, dominant, cultural matrix, my work will be the first to illuminate the hitherto un-examined culture of American-born Chinese from a non-assimilationist, historical/critical perspective.
520 $a By examining the autobiographies, memoirs, folklore, fiction, letters, and oral histories of Chinese Americans, I reconstructed their perceptions of themselves and their worldview codified in their language. Thus tracing their thoughts, I found the sources of both their resistance and conformity to the historical context, I demonstrated how their expressions were linked to the social world and manifested in material and political circumstances.
520 $a The interplay of various components involved in the ethnic identification process constitutes a dynamic and complex process. To say that American-born Chinese simply desired assimilation is as false as to say that they consistently opted for ethnic preservation. The activities of the American-borns are woven from multiple strands that make up the total social fabric of their world. Through the flux of international and domestic forces, they were at once the products of their nurture as well as the agents of social change. History attests to the existence of both tendencies congealed into a pattern which would become the very consciousness of being Chinese American in the twentieth century.
