The purpose of this study was to identify the learning needs, motivational orientations, and deterrents of registered nurses in Taiwan teaching hospitals. It was designed to assess the characteristics of nurses and their continuing education activities and resources. It also was designed to test two hypotheses that nurses' positions, educational backgrounds, years of experience, age, marital status, and sex will impact on their motivations, needs, and barriers for participating continuing education activity. A questionnaire was used to collect data from a sample of 371 nurses. The questionnaire included agreement scale items, open-ended questions, and demographic items.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a The analysis of the demographic data revealed that the majority of the nurses in the sample graduated from diploma programs in nursing. Three motivational orientations were identified from factor analysis. The analysis of the Likert scale agreement data revealed that the majority of nurses in the sample were attending continuing education for personal and professional knowledge enrichment. The continuing education needs was very strong and positive. Time constraints and perceived irrelevant content were the greatest deterrents for continuing education participation.
520 $a An analysis of the results did not support most of the hypotheses tested. For the sample of nurses who participated in this study, the variables of position, experience, educational background, age, and marital status had no significant impact on their motivational orientations or the deterrent factors for continuing education participation.
520 $a The findings of this study indicate the different motivations of nurses participation in continuing education. They perceived a strong need for continuing education. The findings could help nurse educators and administrators in Taiwan to have a better understanding as to what motivates nurses to participate in continuing education activity and how to meet the needs of these nurses. It could provide the basis for planning and developing more, and useful, continuing education programs for the nursing staff in hospital settings.
