Previous attachment research in Western countries indicate that maternal and teacher attachment relationships can predict preschool children's social competence with peers. The present dissertation research was designed in an attempt to explore similar trends in a Chinese sample. Seventy-eight children (38 girls), their mothers (n = 78), and their teachers (n = 12) from a preschool in Beijing, China participated in this study. The mean age of the children was 58 months. In the sample, there were 40 children enrolled in the day care program, 38 children enrolled in boarding program that was provided by the same preschool.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The measure of maternal and teacher attachment security was the Chinese version of the Waters and Deane's Attachment Q-set with the Chinese attachment criterion sort established by 44 Chinese experts. The measures of social competence were peer sociometrics, and ratings on aggression, help, and popularity by teachers as well as by peers. Results suggested that both maternal and teacher attachment security had strong associations with children's social competence. Children with high attachment security scores tended to be less aggressive, liked to help others more, and were more popular among peers than children with low attachment security scores. Early child care experience (defined as age of entering first preschool, number of preschool changes, and hours spent at the first preschool) were found to have no significant correlation with maternal attachment security scores. However, age of entering preschool and number of preschool changes could predict teacher attachment security score. Comparisons between the Chinese and American attachment criterion sorts were also reported.
