This study compares the impact of American higher education on gender-role perceptions of female students who come from two societies of distinctively different economic systems in East Asia, Japan and the PRC, where Confucianism is shared as a common tradition. It analyzes how American higher education has altered those women's ideas of their careers and personal lives, exploring how the social structure of the students' country of origin (the different levels of industrialization and westernization, or the socio-economic systems--socialist vs. capitalist countries), the students' field of study, their marital status, and their contact with U.S. feminism all affect their attitudes towards and expectations of their roles as women.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a Along with the current dramatic increase of the foreign student population in the United States, there has been a growing number of studies on issues related to their adjustment. Most, however, treat foreign students as "genderless". Women are often excluded from their subjects; if included, the findings are seldom differentiated by gender.
520 $a Nevertheless, female foreign students have specific problems related to their gender. They have the double disadvantages of being women as well as foreigners in an alien environment. Such gender-related issues are not the concern of the past research. Given the fact that women make up one third of the foreign student population in the United States and will play a crucial role in the future development of their own societies, this is a serious problem. The study aims to fill out such lack.
520 $a The study consists of case studies of 15 female foreign students from Japan and China respectively enrolled in graduate programs at SUNY/Buffalo. It has two parts: a background study of Japanese and Chinese female students in the United States and in their home countries; and studies of individuals from both countries. While the core of the research is the micro- and interpretive study of the women, close attention is paid to the socio-economic constraints in order to locate individual problems in the larger structural context. Based on intensive personal interviews, this study examines whether these women perceive their experiences in American higher education have made differences in their lives with respect to their image of self, their concept of femininity and sexuality, and their occupational, familial, and maternal roles and their political involvement.
