Teaching students entering the field of radiation therapy requires both classroom instruction and practical application. Research has shown that involving students actively in the learning process through reflective thinking of the learning experience will better prepare them for the demands of their future healthcare profession. One way to involve radiation therapy students actively in the learning process during their clinical training is through service learning. Service learning is a hands-on experience in a practical setting, connecting academic learning objectives with community service. The current healthcare industry seems to emphasize efficiency and profitability through technical expertise, often at the expense of the human touch. Radiation therapy educators are challenged with implementing instructional strategies that motivate and engage students to learn the effective caring behaviors needed for quality patient care. The scholarly problem presented in this study is the extent to which service learning can impact student learning of empathic communication skills. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine whether service learning was a suitable means for improving the empathic communication skills that are integral to high quality patient care with radiation therapy students at Baptist College of Health Sciences in Memphis, Tennessee. Ten radiation therapy alumni participated in this study. Through alumni interviews, alumni reflections, and researcher observation and reflection, the results from this qualitative study substantiated that service learning instructional strategy provided a way to improve empathic communication skills needed for quality patient care.
