The short-tailed cricket, Anurogryllus muticus, is a subsocial, burrow-dwelling species. Burrow-making is profoundly interrelated with the morphology, physiology and behavior of this species throughout its life, contributing to reproductive success and survival. Light intensity and duration have a stimulatory effect on this behavior, and the explicit negative phototaxis is correlated with the cricket's inability to exist under dry conditions. A burrow provides shelter from predators, but above all an opportunity for oviposition and ideal humidity conditions for egg development.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a Mating intensifies digging behavior and stimulates food-provisioning of the burrow. Since mating takes place before the ovaries are fully developed, the time span of several days until egg-laying is used for increased food intake resulting in egg production and accumulation of nutrient reserves in the fatbody. Consequently, food deprivation after the onset of egg-laying has no effect on the number of eggs deposited or on maternal care behavior, which extends to both eggs and hatchlings. Hatchlings prefer to consume newly laid eggs over embryonic eggs.
520 $a Comparative studies on the reproductive behavior and physiology of several species of field crickets have shown that in A. muticus calling is under circadian control, lasts only for ca. 30 min per circadian period, is exceedingly loud (110 dB/10 cm) and requires high energy output (O$\sb2$ consumption is ca. 48 mol/h/g). This unusually high energy demand is accommodated by a switch from carbohydrate to lipid metabolism.
520 $a The ability to perform quick matings (3.3 minutes) at short intervals compensates for the brief calling period. Multiple matings are made possible by producing spermatophores within 6 seconds, which are held by a male during depletion. With successive inseminations, the spermatophores become smaller in size, and a maximum of 15 spermatophores are produced during a male's lifetime.
520 $a Most A. muticus shed their flight wings within a few days after the imaginal molt. In such crickets, the flight muscles already show degenerative symptoms before the imaginal molt. There are indications that, by histolysis of these muscles, the resulting energy products are relocated in the ovaries.
