Unprecedented urbanization since the late 1800s has transformed the world's landscape from the village to the metropolis, with the small town in between. 520 $a In My Antonia both the abundant warm hues in descriptions of setting and the motif of the heroine's emergence from the earth serve to deify her and celebrate the agrarian way of life for which she stands. Although the dominant white color in The Border Town makes West Hunan hardly as roseate as Cather's Nebraska, its heroine Cuicui shares Antonia's mystic fertility, which promises to preserve and propagate their agrestic heritage. Whereas in Sister Carrie and in Rickshaw, Carrie and Xiangzi, dehumanized and de-animated, are both barren in the end. In spite of the unappealing ambience in Winesburg, Ohio and Hwang Chun-ming's stories, the beauty and fecundity of the townsfolk eventually transcend their incarceration by small town mentalities.
520 $a The study reveals a thematic coherence in American and Chinese regional literatures, which tend to idealize the agrarian life while expressing a revulsion against materialism and selfishness precipitated by urbanization. In contrast to the villagers' simplicity and altruism, urbanites are contenders in a bleak arena, where success and failure are ultimately measured only in dollars and dimes. It is in Anderson's and Hwang's small towns, as midground between the village and the metropolis, that a counterpoise is created between optimism and pessimism in the rural-urban dichotomy. The study concludes with an investigation of this idea as expressed in verse. Nurtured by the same native soil, Robert Frost's and Zhu Ziqing's poetry, like the works of their regional contemporaries, also utilize similar conceptions of mixed light and shadow. While Zhu's early poems are full of sanguine prospects as seen in Cather's fictional prairie, his later prose works approach the complexity in Frost's poetry, with an awareness of the ironies in both natural and social milieu.
