The co-occurrence of anxiety and depressive symptoms or disorders has been studied extensively in terms of symptomatology or psychopharmacological treatment, and learned helplessness theories have been examined explicitly to explain the etiology of anxiety and depression separately over the past twenty years. Yet, very little research has empirically addressed the issues of the relationship between anxiety and depression, in which anxiety is more often seen to precede rather than to follow depression, based upon the helplessness-hopelessness theory (Alloy, et al., 1990). Using a longitudinal, prospective research design from a stress-diathesis framework, the present study investigated the role of certainty of helplessness in the symptom continuum from anxiety, through depression, to hopelessness depression as well as the predictive strength of the model.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a Three hypotheses were examined: (1) certainty of helplessness will moderate the association between stress and symptoms; (2) certainty of helplessness will moderate the relationship between antecedent symptoms and consequent symptoms along the symptom continuum under stress; and (3) the helplessness-hopelessness model will account for the clinical phenomenon of comorbidity of anxiety and depression. Considering the special nature of symptom distribution and potentially higher prevalence rates of mixed anxiety-depression of Chinese patients in Taiwan, data were collected from two parallel samples: a clinically diagnosed patient sample (N = 127) and a low-risk college student sample (N = 109) in Taiwan. Stress, cognitive evaluation, and symptoms were assessed on a self-report questionnaire at each of three time points over a period of three months. ANOVAs and multiple regression were utilized to analyze data from two samples separately.
520 $a Results revealed that moderational effects of certainty of helplessness were found in the associations between stress and symptoms in most cases in patients, but not in college students; moderational effects of certainty of helplessness were found in the shifts from anxiety to depression and from depression to hopelessness depression in patients, but only in the shift from anxiety to depression in college students across many stress contexts. The model with four predictors together was found to predict depression and hopelessness depression, but not anxiety, whether concurrently or consequently assessed, in patients, but not in college students. Overall, the present study generally supported the helplessness-hopelessness theory. The moderational role of certainty of helplessness, the predictive strength of the model and possible cross- cultural application, and the issues concerning stress measures are discussed. Clinical implications and directions for future research in this line are suggested accordingly.
