This study examines the role of familial and cultural factors in the psychosocial adjustment of Chinese adolescent immigrants. The primary goals are: (1) to identify specific factors which put the Chinese adolescent at greater risk for the development of psychosocial problems; and (2) to develop a more comprehensive and empirically based understanding of the Chinese adolescent immigrant's psychosocial adjustment, which integrates the findings of previous research on immigrant adjustment, Chinese family relations and adolescent development. Data was collected from a community based sample of 113 Chinese adolescent immigrants. Independent variables included family relations, perceived parental adjustment and cultural values. Dependent variables included self-image and psychiatric symptomology. The results of this study suggest that adjustment problems among Chinese adolescent immigrants are related to culturally mediated patterns of relatedness. Specific aspects of family functioning, such as higher levels of control and interpersonal involvement, were significantly related to psychosocial adjustment. The endorsement of Chinese cultural values was found to be significantly related to higher levels of psychosocial adjustment. Perceived parental adjustment was also significantly related to adolescent adjustment. These findings underscore the role of culturally specific factors in the psychosocial social adjustment of immigrants.Subjects--Topical Terms:
