Bisphenol-A (BPA), 2,2`-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane is a man-made organic compound. BPA has been used widely in the manufacturing of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins such as linings of canned food and beverage containers. Because of the widespread use of BPA, environmental contamination has occurred leading to exposure and harmful effects on wildlife and humans. The primary human exposure to BPA originates from eating food contaminated by BPA that leaches into food and drinks from heated polycarbonate containers and beverage bottles.

520 $a BPA has been classified as an endocrine disruptor (ECD) that alters the function of endocrine system by mimicking the role of the body's natural hormones. BPA may be attributable to several health disorders including diabetes, prostate cancer, metabolic disorder, immune system alteration, developmental and reproductive problems in wildlife and humans.
520 $a The objective of the study was to determine the levels of BPA in sewage and river water samples using GC-MS. The data generated was used to determine the sources of BPA to the Bee Creek River and Clarks River, spatial variation in the levels, and discern any seasonal variation. Influent, effluent, upstream, and downstream Bee Creek samples were collected during two separate sampling events on September 2014 and February 2015. Additionally, samples from Bee Creek at 4th Street , Clarks River at Highway 94, and Clarks River at Squire Holland Road were collected during three separate sampling events from September 2014 through January 2015. Furthermore, influent and effluent samples from three different wastewater treatment plant samples in Savannah Georgia were analyzed for comparison purposes.
520 $a The water samples were first filtered using the cellulose acetate filter with a pore size of 0.45mum (Millipore HAWP 04700) under a vacuum. The samples were extracted using 100 mL of dichloromethane (CH2Cl2). The eluent was concentrated to 5 mL using a Kuderna-Danish (KD) concentrator then transferred to test tubes. A gentle stream of ultra pure nitrogen gas (>99.9%) was used to reduce the sample extract volume close to dryness. The BPA was then derivatized by adding 70 L of BSTFA [N,O-bis(trimethylsilyl)-trifluoroacetamide), 20 L of 1% TMCS (trimethylchlorosilane) and 10 L of pyridine, and then heating at 70 oC for 15 min. Then the sample was diluted with hexane. Analysis was performed by gas chromatograph equipped with a mass selective detector (GC-MS).
520 $a The results revealed that measurable levels of BPA were found in most of the samples analyzed except the deionized water collected in the laboratory and the water sample from the water fountain in the Chemistry building. Among the samples analyzed, the concentration of BPA in Murray Wastewater Treatment Plant influent samples were higher than Bee Creek and Clarks River samples, indicating input of BPA from multiple sources. Clarks River samples at the Highway-94 bridge contained the lowest concentration (<2.3 ng/L), indicating limited input of BPA in this upstream location. A comparatively lower concentration of BPA in effluent samples (BDL-1.4 mug/L) revealed loss of BPA during wastewater treatment process or dilution. Comparing to Savannah, GA wastewater treatment plant samples, the Murray wastewater treatment plant samples, contained relatively higher concentration of Bisphenol-A.
