This dissertation presents a study of the origins and development of the non-objective sculptural idiom created by Russian Constructivist artists around 1920 and defined by them as "construction". This new concept which evolved in the artistic and political climate following the 1917 October Revolution was conceived on several levels. It considered the work of art metaphorically, as a process of creation and as a physical object. It focused on the material aspect of the work of art, equating it with assembling non-artistic, real materials in real space and incorporating space as an intrinsic part of its form; it was emblematic of the intended fusion of art and life and was to convey the artists' ideological and political point of view. As such it expressed the materialistic ideals and utilitarian ambitions of the new order of Communist society.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a This study investigates that pivotal issues of Constructivism and evaluates to what degree the theoretical aspirations of the avant-garde were fulfilled and whether the artists indeed achieved through "construction" their ultimate goal of shaping the new man and his environment. These questions are discussed against the background of Russian Constructivism i.e. the theories of form, line, color, space and compositions of the pre-1918 period and the evolution of the concept of artistic form and content.
520 $a Furthermore, the study probes the connection between the painterly reliefs and counter-reliefs of Vladimir Tatlin to the later concept of "construction" as developed by the Constructivists in winter/spring 1921 at the Institute of Artistic Culture (INKhUK) in Moscow.
520 $a The basic tenets of Constructivism such as the critical distinction between "construction" and "composition" which were crystalized at INKhUK are exemplified in the work of Liubov Popova (1889-1924) and Aleksandr Rodchenko (1891-1956), who represent paradigms of different aspects of the Constructivist practice and theory. Their approach is contrasted to the work of the second generation of Constructivists for whom ideological convictions played a far less important part. Finally, the reasons for the demise of "construction" in Russia and the importance of Russian Constructivism to other Western movements of the later 20th century are illuminated.
