Utilizing analytical autoethnography, I examine the need for intercultural competence among educators in the United States and I evaluate and enhance my intercultural competence as an English as a Second Language educator. Analysis of the literature and personal data revealed three themes that framed research findings: Privilege-Otherness Dialectic, Acculturation and Intercultural Dissonance, and Personal-Cultural Identity Transformation. As a native-born American woman of European ethnic heritage, I critically interrogate my positions of privilege and otherness within multicultural American history and within sociocultural contexts in the U.S. and in the Asian countries where I studied, taught, and lived for six years. From a phenomenological perspective, I excavate and analyze the enculturated beliefs, values, and assumptions that have underpinned my worldview and self-concept. A self-reflective narrative explicates how my cross-cultural immersion in Asia catalyzed significant intrapersonal changes, sharpening the perception of myself as a multidimensional sociocultural actor with a profoundly shaped personal-cultural identity.
