This dissertation explores the complex links between long distance exchange, burial elaboration and the potential emergence of social differentiation in formally non-stratified, small-scale societies. The author investigated these inter-related phenomena as they occurred during the Early Woodland period (ca. 3,000-2,000 cal yr BP) in the Northeastern region of the North American Eastern Woodlands. The Early Woodland interaction sphere represents one of the first inter-regional, large-scale exchange networks to ever develop north of Mesoamerica. The reasons and processes behind its genesis continue to be poorly understood, however.

520 $a The author articulated three broad models for the initiation and maintenance of the Early Woodland interaction sphere based upon earlier researchers' hypotheses. While versions of some of the models were proposed over fifty years ago, none had yet been thoroughly discounted as a causal factor. In order to evaluate each of the models, the author analyzed and summarized the materials and artifact forms that circulated within the interaction sphere, analyzed the synchronic and diachronic parameters of its constituent burial complexes and their taxonomic validity, examined select environmental proxies for clues about the environment in the Northeast during the Early Woodland period, and finally analyzed in detail the structure and content of six mortuary sites within a specific section of the Northeast. The author's research indicated that a model based upon the actions of aggrandizers manipulating circumstances to their advantage is the most applicable explanation for the initiation and maintenance of the interaction sphere, at least in the Northeast.
520 $a Nevertheless, the research suggests that these aggrandizers did not manipulate specific staple resources or territories in order to achieve elevated status within their constituent groups. Rather, the author contends that magico-religious practitioners manipulated esoteric and privileged knowledge considered essential for the maintenance of the community, and that they were potentially aided in these processes by inclement environmental and/or social conditions.
