Experiences of aggression and violence in the workplace are a concern for both organizations and employees. One occupation that is particularly at risk for experiencing aggression is journalism. Because of the unique nature of their work, journalists are at risk for experiencing aggression from both organizational insiders and organizational outsiders. Despite being a high-risk occupation, the experiences of journalists have yet to be thoroughly examined. This dissertation addresses this gap in the literature by examining the risk factors and consequences associated with experiencing two specific types of aggression among journalists: occupational intimidation and sexual harassment. This dissertation introduces the construct of occupational intimidation as a form of occupation-specific aggression faced by journalists. In order to better understand the functioning of occupational intimidation, it is compared to an empirically supported model of the risk factors and consequences associated with sexual harassment. Using a sample of 286 working journalists, analyses were conducted to determine the organizational and individual risk factors associated with experiencing occupational intimidation and sexual harassment. Analyses also examined the work-related individual outcomes associated with experiencing both types of aggression. The results of this study indicate that journalists who cover certain stories are more at risk for experiencing occupational intimidation while women and journalists who spend more time traveling are more at risk for experiencing sexual harassment. Occupational intimidation and sexual harassment are both related to decreases in job performance. Experiencing sexual harassment is also related to decreased perceived organizational support and increased counterproductive behaviors. Implications of these findings and overall contributions of this study to the understanding of aggression amongst journalists are discussed.
