This qualitative study sought to discover the meaning and essence of traditional martial arts practice for experienced women martial artists. In accordance with the method of heuristic inquiry developed by Moustakas (1990) in Heuristic Research: Design, Methodology, and Applications , the researcher's intense interest in and personal connection to the research topic guided the search. The researcher and nine participants, or co-researchers, provided data for the study through the researcher's self-reflective journal and nine in-depth interviews reporting the participants' accounts of their lived experiences of traditional martial arts practice. Heuristic data collection and analysis involved six phases: the researcher's initial engagement with the topic, immersion into the research question, periods of incubation and disengagement from direct focus on the research question, illumination of the meanings discovered, explication and elucidation of those meanings, and a creative synthesis of the underlying essence of the experience under exploration (Moustakas, 1990). This process of analysis yielded twenty-three patterns of meaning clustered around seven underlying themes: changing motivations, self-discovery and personal growth, healing and wellness, community atmosphere, impact on other areas of life, differing spiritual perspectives, and gender issues. Three exemplary portraits added to these collective themes the unique lived experiences of three selected participants, and the creative synthesis captured the meaning and essence of the experience shared across participants.
