This dissertation explores how Thomas Keating's teaching on Centering Prayer is supported and expanded by Zhu Xi's teachings on quiet-sitting and cosmology. New insights for Christian anthropology and contemplation are inspired by three foundational concepts in Zhu's cosmology: a) the impersonal li and qi are the two basic cosmic entities; b) quietude and activity are the two basic modalities of the cosmic entities; and c) bipolarity and zhong-yong are the two basic cosmic rules of maintaining harmonious existence and creativity in this cosmos.

520 $a While based on Sandra Schneiders's interdisciplinary and hermeneutical approach to the academic study of spirituality, this Christian-Confucian dialogue also adopts Francis Clooney's framework for comparative theology. Drawing from Zhu's Neo-Confucian insight, I argue that quiet practice is indispensable because it offers an organic connection with human nature and the Ulitmate in quietude. In addition, recent empirical studies provide indirect support to Zhu's and Keating's claims about the contributions of quiet practice to human wellbeing.
520 $a With its scientifically acclaimed benefits, mindfulness has surged as a popular means to enhance wellbeing in the Western society. To a certain extent, it is portrayed as a means for health and success in the public. Eleanor Rosch, a professor of psychology known for her work on the psychological implications of the Eastern meditation traditions, concludes that quiet practice, developed by world religions under different names, is a universal and unique way to tap into the wisdom of the Source and bring about personal transformation, not simply general heath and worldly success. When this happens on a massive scale, the world will be transformed into a place of justice and peace.
