The use of surveys in research involves a number of carefully weighted considerations that affect quality data and validity of inferences. Most of these considerations have been adequately and comprehensively addressed in the literature. However, the data analysis methodology remained to be underrepresented. As a result, researchers most commonly rely on data analyses plans based on the Classical Test Theory (CTT), which has several methodological shortcomings particularly in situations where more complex survey instruments are employed and the individual survey items are intended to represent underlying latent-class structures. The analytical approaches in these situations demand the need for more objective measurement theories and psychometrically defensible mathematical models that allow for examining explicit relationships between the survey items and the implied underlying latent-class variables.

520 $a This investigation fills in the methodological gap in survey research by demonstrating the use of the Rasch models in the analyses of data collected with complex survey instruments. This research was conducted as a case study. The data that were analyzed were collected as part of a large-scale research project launched in 2002 by Chaban and Holland at the National Center for Research on Europe, University of Canterbury, New Zealand. The dataset consisted of 10,034 responses from general publics in 10 countries who completed an on-line survey, "The EU in the Eyes of Asia Pacific.".
520 $a The complexity of the instrument required a conceptual mapping of the survey questions with the identification of the items that implied latent-class structures. Once this was achieved, the Rasch models were used to analyze and optimize the latent-class constructs and examine their performance across other respondents variables. This methodology allowed the researcher to establish objective measures of knowledge, descriptive image and perceptions of the EU as well as identify areas where the instrument needed improvement.
