Pregnancy is relatively a distinct research area given the perception of positive lifestyles mothers follow during their pregnancy. While the assumption may have validity, complications do occur during pregnancy and childbirth. It is predicted that every 4.5 minutes an infant is born with a birth defect, and, on average, 1 in 33 infants are born with some type of birth defect. The adverse effects mothers experience following a traumatic childbirth has the ability to increase maternal susceptibility to elevated levels of emotional, physical and psychological distress. The rehabilitation literature is replete with studies signifying the importance of adjustment to disability among clients and consumers and their families. Additionally literature reveals limited research that focus on maternal empowerment and maternal adjustment to birth trauma. This study examined the relationship between maternal empowerment and adjustment among mothers experiencing birth trauma, birth defects, and child disability. For a clearer understanding of the phenomenon, an explanatory sequential mixed methods design: correlation and case study was conducted. Survey methods were utilized in phase one with the Psychological Empowerment Scale (PES) and the Maternal Adjustment Maternal Attitude (MAMA) Questionnaire. To identify predictors of adjustment, regression models were calculated. Results indicated a significant correlation between maternal empowerment and maternal adjustment. A significant correlation exists between PES Formal Participation and the MAMA. Secondly, a significant correlation exists between PES Attitudes to Control and Competence and the MAMA. Computing further correlation models displayed a significant relationship between PES and constructs of maternal adjustment, which included attitudes to sex and attitudes to pregnancy and the baby. Regression models revealed that formal participation is the strongest predictor of maternal adjustment. Phase two, case study, reflected and confirmed significant relationships between phase one and phase two.
