Since China's open-door policy and reform movement began in 1979, English language teaching (ELT) has developed tremendously to meet the needs of China's international interactions with the world. English is becoming so popular that China is now the host of the largest English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom in the world, largest meaning that among the countries where English is not the native or official language, China has the largest number of EFL students. However, little research has been done on issues regarding the development of EFL in China, such as when and how did ELT start? Who sponsored ELT at each stage of its development? Why is English so popular these days? How has it developed to its current status? This dissertation attempts to explain these issues and to account for the forces that have driven ELT into its current being in China.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a If anything, this writing is, first of all, a historical account of ELT development in China, which is so far the first of its kind written in English.
520 $a The dissertation falls into five parts. Chapter I functions as an introduction to the writing, and lays out some background information. Chapter II focuses on the early stages of ELT in China (1830-1900), including the missionary activities and the Chinese efforts in ELT. Chapter III takes a look at the ELT activities and development in the newly founded public schools in China in the first half of the century (1900-1950). This was the period in which some master English teachers had been prepared, and foundation laid for later development. Chapter IV describes the ups and downs of English (1950-1978), how it lost to the Russian language and how it was politicalized during the years of the Cultural Revolution. And the last chapter, Chapter V, tries to capture and present some highlights of the English language resurgence to its highest popularity in the 1980s, and attempts an analysis of the social, economic factors that helped push forward the enterprise of ELT. It concludes by looking ahead at the development of ELT in the 1990s.
