Scope and method of study. Surveys and interviews were conducted to examine the associations between cultural contact, cultural maintenance, inter-group desirability, reference group, and cultural values among Chinese students in the U.S. A questionnaire was adapted from existing scales to measure the research variables. Interviews provided in-depth information on the research questions and helped interpret the statistical results of the surveys. The subjects of the research were Chinese students enrolled in two universities in Beijing, China and in one large Mid-Western university in the U.S.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Survey data were collected from 185 Chinese students in China and 107 Chinese students in the U.S. T-tests and regression models were used to examine the conceptualized associations between cross-cultural interaction and cultural values. It appeared that cultural interaction, cultural maintenance, inter-group desirability, and reference group preference conditioned cultural values in predictable ways. Interviews provided further insights into the cross-cultural interaction process and revealed more subtle mechanisms through which cross-cultural interaction brought about value changes among Chinese students.
