520 $a The purpose of this study is to apply self determination theory and to examine how breast cancer patients utilize the general Internet and the Web based health education intervention of Comprehensive Health Enhancement Support System (CHESS), a computer-based health resource designed to educate people facing a health crisis. This study examines (1) the degree of Internet and CHESS use among women with breast cancer, and to find the outcome measures for the type information they seek (i.e., heath related or non-heath related) to-examine the effectiveness of Internet and CHESS as it relates to the construct of competence, autonomy and relatedness (2) the significant factor(s) for outcome variables.
520 $a The results indicate that CHESS group had better autonomy and relatedness than the Internet group in 10 out 12 comparisons; but there was no significant for competence. For most of the results, there was no significant relationship between intervention usage and outcomes. Other than Internet and CHESS, this study discovers the positive association between using other resources (e.g. book/articles, doctors/nurses, family/friends) and outcomes.
520 $a Age is a significant factor for competence and autonomy, the elder subjects had higher competence and autonomy than younger subjects. Race was a significant factor for autonomy; non-minority patients had higher autonomy than minority patients. Education level and household income was not significant factor for competence and relatedness.
520 $a The results of this study reveal that an integrated online program, CHESS, was a better choice for breast cancer patients than the general Internet. The implication of this study for public health practice and research suggests how cancer survivors can collaborate with researchers, practitioners and influential advocates to develop and implement online interventions that will improve the quality of life for breast cancer survivors, but also maintain traditional intervention approaches.
