This dissertation compares the different approaches to economic transformation in former centrally planned economies. It points out the flaws that underlie all the existing approaches to reform. A micro-experimental approach to reform is suggested as an alternative. Agricultural reform in China since 1978 is used to illustrate how this alternative approach works in practice.
