The study of intergenerational congruence in academic expectations in Asian Americans has not been addressed in the existing literature. It is of concern because Asian Americans highly value academic achievement, but parents and children may clash in their expectations due to differential espousal of Asian and Western values. In particular, Asian American parents may expect their children to concur with their expectations (an Asian value) while children may prefer to pursue their own interests (an American value). This may adversely affect their well-being. This study contributes to the literature by empirically examining intergenerational congruence in choice of academic major, and its contribution to achievement motivation and psychological well-being in Asian American college students.

520 $a A sample of 320 Asian American students completed questionnaires assessing congruence between parents preference and their own choice for academic major, perceived family environment (i.e., parental acceptance, parental pressure, and parental support), approach and avoidance orientations of achievement motivation, and psychological well-being. Results showed that congruence of expectations and perceived family environments predicted achievement motivation orientation. Perceived family environments also predicted psychological well-being in Asian American college students, but congruence of choice of major did not.
520 $a These findings hold significant implications. Researchers have often overlooked the possible negative consequences behind the model minority myth and Asian American success story. The study shows that, although parental pressures to achieve led to a high achievement motivation orientation, it also increased the likelihood of anxiety and depression among students. Future studies should examine different pathways through which congruence of expectation may be associated with psychological well-being among Asian American students. Also, while approach and avoidance orientation of motivations were both predicted by congruence of expectation, they differentially predicted psychological well-being. Future studies should examine the associated achievement behavioral outcomes of approach and avoidance orientations of achievement motivation in Asian American students.
