The adoption of electronic health records by rural health-care nurses has the potential to not only improve the quality of care provided to their patients but also protect patient data and possibly reduce health-care-related costs associated with patients making multiple routine doctor visits that could now be handled electronically. Compared to nurses working in metropolitan or urban areas of the United States, adoption of electronic health records by nurses working in rural health-care settings has been especially slow. This research was conducted using the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology survey instrument developed by Venkatesh and colleagues. The management-level question addressed was: What is the explanatory ability of the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology variables upon the acceptance and usage of electronic health records by rural health-care nurses? A single-stage sampling of nurses identified as working in health-care systems based in rural settings was conducted. The results of multiple regression analysis of survey responses from 129 nurses showed that the variables of performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions did not significantly impact the behavioral intentions of nurses working in rural health-care systems to adopt electronic health records systems. It is recommended that the nurses speak to their counterparts in other health-care systems who have already integrated electronic health records into their organization. This will give nurses a clear understanding of the benefits of electronic health records and help them to understand what changes they will need to make to ensure that their health-care system has the appropriate resources to integrate electronic health records into their organization.
