This dissertation explores the changes that are taking place in migration patterns that are shifting attention away from large metropolitan cities such as New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles that once served as gateways and hubs for migrants in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Instead, migration is transforming the complexion of small towns in the rural South and in the heartland of the Midwest. My research underscores the need to study globalization in small towns and suburbs of mid-sized cities where previously the study of migration and media gained little attention from scholars. This dissertation addresses the seismic changes that are taking places in two cities in Indiana, Fort Wayne and Indianapolis, where a large number of Burmese refugees have been resettled by official voluntary resettlement agencies or have migrated to from other U.S. cities.

520 $a Instead of texts and images of refugees represented in the media in some other distant part of the world or in major U.S. metropolitan news media, these migrants are now represented in the local media of cities in Indiana. I combine perspectives from mass communication, globalization and migration, identity and belonging, and cultural and gender studies. Seeking to examine the ways in which media technologies and nongovernmental organizations intervene in the lives of Burmese refugees, this dissertation is concerned with three areas of inquiry: media representations, nonprofit organizations' representations in strategic communication, and Burmese youth's engagement with media. The overlapping conceptual area of study that drives this dissertation is interdisciplinary inquiry into media and migration.
520 $a Drawing from these combined perspectives, this study interrogates how Indiana journalists shape media coverage of Burmese refugees in both Fort Wayne and Indianapolis. At the same time, these same perspectives are also used to examine how the media of Burmese-led organizations and other voluntary resettlement agencies that serve refugees attempt to influence others in the Indiana community. Finally, my project explores how Burmese young adults are appropriating communication technologies and interacting with popular culture.
