520 $a A demographic information form, the Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale-Self Report (PAIS-SR), and the Sense of Coherence Scale (SOC) were administered to 102 participants with SCI. All participants were members of the Association of People with Spinal Cord Injury in Taipei City (APSCI-Taipei). Using Ward's hierarchical cluster analysis, the participants in the present study were grouped into homogeneous subgroups based on their PAIS-SR factor profiles. Four distinct groups were found, representing different levels of psychosocial adjustment: Well Adjusted, Moderately Adjusted, Moderately Adjusted and Sexually Inexperienced, and Poorly Adjusted.
520 $a To examine those factors affecting psychosocial adjustment, two discriminant analyses were conducted. One analysis used membership in the psychosocial adjustment clusters as the dependent variable and seven demographic characteristics (i.e., current age, gender, level of injury, age at the time of onset, years of education, marriage status, and employment status) as discriminating variables. The other analysis used membership in the psychosocial adjustment clusters as the dependent variable and the three SOC subscale scores (i.e., comprehensibility, manageability, and meaningfulness) as discriminating variables. Employment status, age at the time of onset, injury level, and current age, as well as the motivational and behavioral aspects of coping, were identified as the functions discriminating the groups in these two analyses. Both functions showed moderate power in discriminating among the Taiwanese participants with SCI regarding their psychosocial adjustment. However, poor ability to differentiate persons in the Moderately Adjusted and Sexually Inexperienced and the Poorly Adjusted groups also was noted.
