The purpose of this study was to examine outcomes of summer and winter camp experiences through the eyes of deaf or hard of hearing campers and their parents. A mixed method, pre- and post-test, one-group design was utilized for adolescents who attended a camp specifically designed for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. To measure outcomes the quantitative research employed the use of pre- and post-camp surveys to investigate the impact on the camper's efficacy, self-esteem and leadership, social proficiency, physical and thinking skills, positive values and decision making, Deaf cultural, language, identity, and examined behaviors at home and at school. The research for the phenomenological narrative study involved five families representing campers who rated their experiences low, and campers who rated their experiences high. Results show that campers report growth in the areas of social skill development, physical and thinking skills, and Deaf culture, language, and identity. In addition to these areas, parents report growth in positive identity, social skills, physical and thinking skills, positive values and decision making, and Deaf culture, language, and identity. Conclusions were drawn that camps specifically for children who are deaf and hard of hearing are beneficial. Implications of the research emphasize the need for more study about after-school and out-of-school opportunities and benefits for deaf and hard of hearing children.
