Scope and Method of Study. The purpose of this study was to benchmark administrator and maintenance personnel's knowledge, attitudes, and practices of pesticide use and IPM in Oklahoma public schools. A systematic sample of 298 Oklahoma public school districts was drawn from the population of 534 public school districts. Contacts for the study consisted of school administrators and maintenance personnel within the sample. School administrators and maintenance personnel completed surveys regarding pest management, integrated pest management (IPM), and pesticide use in schools. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze data provided by respondents.

520 $a Findings and Conclusions. Most of the school administrators and maintenance personnel respondents had never heard of IPM, yet those aware of IPM had limited knowledge. More than half of the maintenance personnel could define IPM correctly, while less than half of the administrators defined IPM correctly. Few respondents noted their schools had official written pest management policies. Nonetheless, a majority of the administrators and maintenance personnel reported the use of pesticides in school buildings or on school grounds byway of a routine contract or maintenance agreement with a vendor. Less than one-third of the respondents indicated teachers, staff, parents, and students were notified about pesticide applications. Barriers to implementing IPM practices in schools included budget restrictions and lack of information about IPM. Therefore, IPM information should be distributed to Oklahoma public school officials, as well as maintenance personnel. Because a majority of the respondents noted having routine pesticide applications in their schools, it is concluded that pesticides may be applied at a higher level than necessary, especially since less than half of the maintenance personnel indicated they monitored pests. Although the number one barrier to implementing IPM was lack of finances, in the long run, the cost of IPM is less than routine pesticide applications, and children, school employees, and parents would reap the benefits by having a healthier environment. School administrators and maintenance personnel need more information about school IPM in order to adopt it into an official written pest management policy and fully implement IPM practices in Oklahoma schools.
