This study explored the lived leadership experiences of behavioral health private practice business owners who employ administrative staff. The research question was: What are the lived experiences of leadership of the behavioral health private practice business owners who employ administrative staff and are residing in Pueblo, Colorado? A qualitative method and transformational phenomenological design was used. The target population was behavioral health for-profit business owners whose ages ranged from 40 to 70 years and had owned their practice for at least 5 years. A sample of nine behavioral health practitioners and/or owners were solicited to participate in semi-structured interviews consisting of open-ended questions. The data analysis revealed that (a) practitioners with little or no leadership training experienced more negative experiences, (b) practitioners who had leadership training experienced more positive experiences, (c) practitioners preferred to lead their clients rather than staff, and (d) practitioners needed boundaries in their employer/employee relationships. The findings provide insight into the leadership experiences, thoughts, and emotions of practitioners who led their administrative staff. The intent of this study was to demonstrate and encourage graduate institutions of a need for leadership training as part of their curriculum and for practitioners, coaches, and consultants to provide their services to help this type of organization.
