Coastal zones are complex habitats with high biodiversity and, therefore, important ecosystem functions (e.g. water quality and fisheries). However, coastal zones are often heavily degraded by human activity and less well monitored than open water areas. In my thesis, I provided the framework for a sampling design to monitor coastal fish communities in Lake Erie. Fisheries management agencies across the Great Lakes are considering initiating annual long-term monitoring programs of coastal fish communities and the sampling strategy developed here may also be useful in other systems. I determined that night electrofishing during early summer captured the highest number of species in coastal habitat. For Ohio's Lake Erie coastal survey, 8-15 sites with a distance of 400 m or 500 m per site captured 65% and 75% of total fish species. One aspect of successful monitoring programs is the ability to address specific environmental questions that arise over time. I used the two initial years of monitoring data to look for effects of coastline alteration (armoring and vegetation removal) on total fish species richness and selected individual fish species. Total fish species richness was greater in areas with vegetation on all background substrate types, while the impacts of armoring varied across substrate types. I also created a habitat use index that allowed me to model hypothetical scenarios of coastline alteration. The worst case scenario, armoring the entire coastline and removing all vegetation, predicted reduced habitat use by 70% of species. The scenario that maintained armor at the current level (~56% for the test area) and allowed vegetation to recolonize all areas did predict increased habitat use for the most species (75%). This scenario may be the most cost-effective option for the future of coastline management. This study provided a sampling design that can be applied across many large freshwater lakes to further understand the short and long-term impacts of environmental stressors to coastal fish communities. Additionally, it showed the extent to which coastline alteration may impact fish communities.
