The researcher's primary concern in this study was to investigate the effects of peer modeling (the male model, female model, and non-peer model) on male and female Taiwanese College students' self-efficacy and reading performance in an English reading class. A secondary purpose of this study was to assess student gender effects, and the interaction effects between peer modeling and gender, on students' self-efficacy and reading performance related to English learning. Finally, the study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of the instruction of the reading strategy on Taiwanese College students' comprehension of English passages.

One-hundred forty four college sophomore students, including 80 males and 64 females, enrolled in the Shu-Teh Institute of Technology and Commerce in Taiwan were recruited as participants for this experimental study. Students were asked to participate voluntarily in this research and were randomly assigned to two treatment groups and a control condition within their gender group. Data were collected in students' English class. This experimental study used a 3 x 2 factorial design.

The predictions of this study were supported by the data. First, the prediction of peer modeling effect on students' self-efficacy was supported. The results of the data analysis for the hypotheses testing indicated that students in both the male peer model group and the female model group had significantly higher self-efficacy than those who were in the non-peer model group. Second, for the prediction of reading performance, students in both the male peer model group and the female model group scored significantly higher in reading performance than those who were in the non-peer model group. Third, the results also reported that the female peer model seemed to have a greater impact on Taiwanese female college students than she did for male college students. That is, the female students in the female peer model group had significantly higher self-efficacy and scored significantly higher in reading performance than the male students in the female peer model group.
