This dissertation explores the way in which thinkers of the early 18 th century answered the challenges posed by the revival and proliferation of philosophical and historical skepticism. The proposition that the human mind was incapable of obtaining true and certain knowledge of the surrounding world and of its own operations had complex philosophical, religious, and moral implications for the learned culture of Europe. However, while early-modern skeptics are often credited with ushering in modernity by providing effective critiques of traditional intellectual authorities, their opponents played at least an equal role in shaping the discourses of the Enlightenment and formulating new criteria of doubt and certainty. The contextual analysis of the debates between the skeptics and their most vocal opponents reveals how the participants in this changing intellectual culture sought new ways to strengthen the foundations of their knowledge about the world. I explain how the emerging debates surrounding philosophical skepticism played a profound role in shaping the intellectual contours of the so-called "Age of Reason," which arose not from a radical break with preceding intellectual traditions, but developed gradually out of contests over the nature and extent of the powers of understanding. Ultimately, I question the teleological portrayal of the Enlightenment as the triumphant "Age of Reason" that formulated the essential modern philosophical and political conceptions. I analyze the significance of contemporaneous self-referential assertions that declared all philosophical arguments to be based on "autonomous reason," and I describe the various equivocal uses of the term "reason." Finally, I demonstrate that, far from having extreme confidence in the powers of the human mind, even the most vocal of the early-modern opponents of established intellectual authorities remained wary of the limitations of "reason's" abilities.
