Objectives: Practicing clinical nurses are required to be up-to-date with the latest nursing education and mandatory competencies in order to ensure patients receive high quality and safe nursing care. While rapid advances in technology involving smaller, more powerful handheld computers enhance clinical nursing education, little research has been conducted to examine their use in hospital-based clinical nursing education. This study was designed to identify nurses' perception of and satisfaction with using a technology-enhanced interactive education module.

520 $a Methods: This pilot study used a 10-minute touchscreen tablet computer education module implemented in a surgical ICU at a tertiary teaching hospital. An online questionnaire was self-administered to evaluate nurses' perception of and satisfaction with both the education module and the tablet computer. Responses obtained from study participants were analyzed using descriptive statistics.
520 $a Results: Of 64 nurses who completed the training, 48 nurses (78 %) participated in the study. The perception of and satisfaction with the touchscreen tablet computer education technology had favorable results as more than 94 % of the study participants presented either `agree' or `strongly agree'. As expected, the satisfaction and perception of the education module and touchscreen tablet computer were highly correlated (r=0.84, p<.01).
520 $a Conclusions: Overall, the participants rated their perception and satisfaction with both the touchscreen tablet computer and education module positively. Although it is not clear what directly contributed to positive perception and satisfaction of practicing nurses, it is deemed that developing concise, interactive education using handheld computers is necessary to facilitate hospital-based continuing education.
