The World Health Organization (2011) estimates that by 2030 the number of people living with diabetes worldwide will double. The economic burden created by diabetes makes this disease an important health concern (Ettaro, Songer, Zhang, & Engelgau, 2004). The annual cost per individual was one and a half times as much for type 1 diabetes (T1D) compared to type 2 diabetes (Dall et al., 2010). Individuals with T1D are often diagnosed before the age of 20, making the lifetime burden for these individuals significant. Participants were identified based on ICD-9 codes from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services specific to diabetes mellitus through Children's Hospital of Central California's electronic medical record system. Of the 3,204 individuals who met ICD-9 code criteria 542 were included in incidence data for years 2009-2013. Of the 2,782 individuals who met ICD-9 code criteria 1,539 were included in prevalence data for years 2005, 2009, and 2013. The incidence and prevalence of T1D in the Central Valley is changing. Prevalence of T1D in Asian/Pacific Islanders and African Americans in this region is greater than previously reported. The prevalence rates for Hispanic and Non-Hispanic-Whites were lower than most published research, while the incidence rates for the aforementioned ethnic groups were found to be higher in this region than described in the literature. A significant difference in age at diagnosis was found with males being diagnosed almost a year later than females in this sample.
