As the number of narcissistic CEOs continues to increase, examining their effects on organizations has increased in saliency. The purpose of the current dissertation was to add to recent research efforts by investigating the relationship between CEO narcissism and firm performance. Though prior studies have attempted to explore this relationship, there are several noticeable shortcomings in this research, and the literature in general, which limit our understanding of CEO narcissism and, ultimately, our ability to uncover its effects on firm performance. As such, this dissertation attempts to answer this significant research question by first systematically "drilling down" to and addressing the shortcomings of extant work. I begin by exploring the general discussion relating CEO narcissism to firm performance in the research literature and business press, grouping what appears to be a myriad of opposing perspectives of narcissism into three broad categories (e.g., the "bright", "dark" and balanced views) and offering a testable proposition for each. Next, I turn my attention to the issues in the larger literature on CEO narcissism. In particular, I address the shortcomings of previous efforts by outlining four existing issues in current research and providing corresponding recommendations.

520 $a Based on these recommendations, I develop and test a theoretical model with not only competing hypotheses corresponding to the dark and bright views of both forms of narcissism, but also contingency hypotheses that advance a balanced view that takes into account the moderating role of the industry environment. I test these hypotheses on a sample of 109 Fortune 500 CEOs' using computer-aided content analytic measures of both forms of narcissism--applied to CEOs' spontaneous interviews--and several archival measures of firm performance and the industry environment. Using multilevel analysis, I find evidence of not only a direct effect of CEO grandiose and vulnerable narcissism on firm performance, but also moderating effects when narcissistic CEOs and their nesting arrangements in industry environments are accounted for.
