520 $a From this theoretical perspective, this research analyzes processes of class formations and re-formations in nineteenth-century France. It argues that French workers first made themselves into a class in a non-capitalist context, facing an extra-economic mode of exploitation where surplus appropriation was mediated by the state. Facing this parasitic state, they developed a republican class consciousness which often leaned toward socialist ideas aiming at developing existing normative regulations of social relations of production. The rise of capitalist social property relations and of a concomitant form of surplus appropriation mediated by market relations during the last third of the nineteenth century launched a process of working-class re-formation. Refusing the de-politicization of social relations of production and their submission to market imperatives, French workers then engaged in increasingly frequent strikes aimed at reasserting their customary control over their labour processes. In the process, and while preserving an ambivalent attachment to republican institutions, French workers also developed an independent labour movement.
520 $a This historical narrative shows that early working-class formations did not emerge out of an abstract process of "industrialization" but were actively made by conscious agents out of historically specific experiences of class exploitation. Specific modes of exploitive production led direct producers to develop new forms of solidarity and shaped this process by exercising pressures and setting (contested) limits. Accordingly, class should not be seen as disappearing because of a technological transformation of the organization of production related to a process of de-industrialization.
